Fully Booked: please contact me to join the waiting list. With over 22 years of experience as a teacher of English, Head of English, Senior examiner (for a major exam board) and on-line tutor you and your child are in safe hands. I am passionate about English and the subject’s power to transform lives. In a world where we are bombarded by literacy it is essential our children have the skills to manipulate language and make it work for them. Whether studying towards an exam or just wanting extra help to aid learning, I pride myself on being able to assess quickly the barriers to learning that pupils are facing and plan logically to help them overcome them. Seeing the difference tutoring makes in supporting students meet and then exceed targets is amazing. English Tutor

Sophie

Head of Communications, Innovation and Technology

Hello! I am delighted to be working with The Teaching Room as the Head of Communications, Innovation and Technology. Let me tell you a little about myself: I have been lucky enough to visit some of the world's most amazing countries and was to be able to combine my love of travel and people by working as a camp director in Upstate New York. As a law graduate, with a first-class degree, I have excellent communication skills and a keen mind. During the pandemic I helped our country as a key worker while still studying for my degree in law. Passing with a First made me proud of the hard work I had put in but I know how hard work alone sometimes isn't enough; sometimes you need a little help and that’s why I am so pleased to be working with The Teaching Room. I am so happy to be overseeing the exciting expansion of The Teaching Room and am available to answer any questions or queries from our parents and students and any new families who are ready to be part of The Teaching Room family.

Martin

A level English Literature Specialist

I have 39 years’ experience teaching GCSE and A Level English Literature. Between 1995 and 2008 I was a part-time lecturer at the University of Sunderland where my specialisms were Shakespeare, Major Poets from Chaucer to Larkin and post-16 models of assessment. Though I retired from full-time education in 2014 when I was head of Sixth Form in a major FE college I returned to part-time work within a year, missing the contact with students, the lifeblood of education. I now work two days a week in a school sixth form where my major focus is on raising achievement. I know how important examination success is: I have worked for a major exam board at a very senior level since 1994 and have been examining A Level English Literature since 1987, so my experience of my subject and how it is examined is extensive. In recent years I have written several well-received works of literary criticism: The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Philip Allan 2010; King Lear, Hodder Education 2011, reprint 2016; The Winter’s Tale, Hodder Education 2016 and The Taming of the Shrew, Hodder Education 2016. It is a privilege to help students on their voyage through English Literature: I look forward to our journeys together.

Jo

A Level Language Specialist

Hi, my name is Jo, and I have been teaching for 28 years now at a further education college in the North East. I have taught on a range of A Levels: English Language, English Literature and Theatre studies as well as GCSE English Language and English Literature. Alongside my teaching commitments, I was a member of the college’s teaching and learning ‘HUB’ as an advanced practitioner, where I delivered staff development to staff across college with a focus on embedding literacy within lessons. During this time, it has been a pleasure to work with so many young people, see them achieve their goals and go off to university; and often, afterwards, discover the careers they have eventually chosen. I’m passionate about English, and the power of language and its capacity to enrich our lives in so many ways and love talking about it in work and outside if it! I look forward to meeting more enquiring minds through ‘The Teaching Room’ and nurturing the same love of language that I have.
